In Myrtle Beach there is a discussion going on about whether or not visitors taxes should be applied to people that are part of a timeshare property. There are supporters of this new tax being put into place because they feel that it could bring in millions of dollars for marketing efforts that promote the state’s tourism business However, the opponents of this new tax claim that timeshare owners have enough expenses to pay due to property taxes on condos and should not be charged similar taxes to what people staying in a hotel have to pay. Myrtle Beach contains around 6,000 timeshare units. This would mean that about 6,000 people would have to not only pay their normal property tax, they would also have to pay an accommodations tax. The supporters of this tax also try to emphasize that timeshares are a group ownership and not the same as an individual person that owns a vacation home. These accommodation taxes are collected and then spread out to different tourism groups throughout the state. This money is then used to improve tourist attractions and help advertise. This money would also be used to improve streets, beaches, and normal upkeep processes that help to keep the area clean.
